ChatGPT slow in long conversations? 6 fixes for the lag (2026)
If a ChatGPT conversation has grown to hundreds of messages, you have probably seen it: every keystroke appears with a delay, scrolling stutters, and sometimes the tab shows “Page unresponsive”. The good news is that this is usually not OpenAI being slow. It is your browser struggling.
Why long ChatGPT chats lag
The ChatGPT web app keeps every message of the conversation in the page. Each answer can contain syntax-highlighted code, tables, math and images. After a few hundred turns that becomes tens of thousands of page elements, and the browser has to lay them out again whenever something changes, including while the reply is streaming and while you type.
So the slowdown grows with the length of the chat, not with your internet speed. A quick test: open a brand-new chat. If it is fast there, the problem is the size of the old one.
Fix 1: Start a new chat with a summary
Ask ChatGPT: “Summarise this conversation, including decisions, code and open questions, so I can continue in a new chat.” Paste the summary into a new chat. This is free and works everywhere, but you lose the easy scroll-back and some detail.
Fix 2: Hide old messages (keep the chat)
If you want to keep working in the same thread, the most effective fix is to render fewer messages. Our free extension Long-chat Speed Fix does exactly that: it shows only the latest 20 messages (adjustable from 5 to 50) and brings earlier ones back when you scroll up or click “Show earlier”. Nothing is deleted and it does not change what the model remembers. It only changes what your browser draws. It runs 100% locally. Other extensions take a similar approach; whichever you choose, check that it does not send your chats anywhere.
Fix 3: Turn on hardware acceleration
In Chrome go to Settings → System and enable “Use graphics acceleration when available”, then restart. Without it, scrolling long pages is much heavier.
Fix 4: Free up memory
Close other heavy tabs, enable Chrome’s Memory Saver (Settings → Performance) for other sites, and reload the ChatGPT tab occasionally. A tab that has been open for days accumulates memory.
Fix 5: Disable conflicting extensions
Grammar checkers and page translators scan every change in the page, which is expensive in a huge chat. Try an Incognito window with extensions off to compare.
Fix 6: Use the desktop app for very long sessions
The ChatGPT desktop app has the same rendering cost, but it avoids competition with your other tabs. It helps a bit, not a lot.
When it’s not your browser
If even a new chat is slow to respond (the answer takes long to start), that is server load or network, and none of the above will help. Check status.openai.com.
FAQ
Does hiding messages make ChatGPT forget them?
No. The conversation stays on OpenAI’s side unchanged; only the on-screen rendering is reduced.
Is there a message limit per chat?
Very long chats can eventually hit context limits, where the model stops considering early messages. That is separate from browser lag, and another good reason for the summary approach.
