Claude chat slow or freezing? How to fix lag in long Claude conversations
Long sessions on claude.ai can start to feel heavy: the input box lags, scrolling stutters, and Chrome may warn that the page is unresponsive. There are two different kinds of “slow” and they need different fixes.
Slow page vs. slow answers
- The page is slow (typing lag, janky scroll): a browser rendering problem that grows with chat length.
- Answers are slow or you hit limits: a long conversation means Claude re-reads a lot of context on every turn, which takes longer and uses up your usage limits faster. Check status.anthropic.com for outages.
Fix the page: render fewer messages
Every message, code block and artifact preview stays in the page. Hiding older messages is the single biggest improvement. Long-chat Speed Fix shows only the latest messages and restores earlier ones on scroll or with one click; Claude support is part of Pro (3.99 €/month or 19 € lifetime), the ChatGPT version is free. It works locally and never reads or sends your chats.
Fix the context: branch into a new chat
Ask Claude for a handover summary (“summarise decisions, current code and next steps”), then start a new chat. If you use Projects, put stable material (specs, docs, code) into the project knowledge instead of pasting it repeatedly. That keeps each conversation short and answers faster.
Browser hygiene
- Enable hardware acceleration (
Chrome → Settings → System). - Close or collapse big artifacts you no longer need.
- Test without other extensions (Incognito) to rule out conflicts.
- Reload the tab after long sessions to reclaim memory.
FAQ
Does hiding messages change what Claude remembers?
No, it only affects what your browser displays. To reduce what Claude processes, start a new chat with a summary.
