When does Claude’s usage limit reset? 5-hour session vs weekly limit
“You’ve reached your usage limit” comes with a reset time, but there are actually two different limits behind it. This guide sticks to what Anthropic documents and shows you where to find your own numbers.
The two limits
- Session limit: resets every five hours. Paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, seat-based Enterprise) have one, and Anthropic describes free usage on the same rolling five-hour window.
- Weekly limit: paid plans also have a weekly limit that resets once a week. According to Anthropic’s Max plan article, the weekly reset happens at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, regardless of when you started using Claude or when you subscribed. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for one model family.
Both limits are shared across Claude on the web, desktop and mobile apps, and Claude Code (source).
Where to see your reset time
Go to claude.ai → Settings → Usage. It shows how much of the current session and of your weekly limits you’ve used, and when each one resets. Anthropic says there is no fixed message count: usage depends on conversation length and complexity, the model, the features you use and the effort level (source).
Keep an eye on it without opening Settings
Our free Claude Usage Tracker extension shows your current session usage as a toolbar badge (green → amber → red), plus your weekly limits and a live countdown to each reset. It reads the same numbers claude.ai shows on the Usage page, runs locally and never reads your conversations. Pro (2.99 €/month or 15 € lifetime) adds history charts, a “you’ll hit the limit at …” forecast and threshold alerts.
What to do when you hit a limit
- Wait for the reset shown in Settings › Usage.
- Turn on usage credits (paid plans) to keep going at API rates. This doesn’t change when your limits reset.
- Upgrade if you keep hitting the limit.
Make your limit last longer
- Long chats are expensive: every turn re-processes the history. Start a new chat with a summary when a thread gets long.
- Put reference material in a Project instead of pasting it again and again.
- Use a lighter model for simple tasks.
