How to export a ChatGPT chat to PDF or Markdown (4 ways)
ChatGPT has no “Download this chat” button for a single conversation. Here are the options that actually work in 2026, from built-in to one-click.
1. Official data export (everything, as HTML/JSON)
Go to Settings → Data controls → Export data. OpenAI emails you a ZIP containing chat.html and conversations.json with all your chats. Great as a backup, awkward if you want one conversation as a tidy file: you have to search the big HTML or parse the JSON.
2. Print to PDF
Open the chat, press Ctrl/Cmd + P and choose “Save as PDF”. It is free but often disappointing: the sidebar and buttons get printed, long code blocks are cut off at the page edge, and very long chats may only print partially because the page loads messages lazily.
3. Copy response / copy as Markdown
Each answer has a copy button that copies Markdown. Fine for one answer; tedious for a 100-message conversation, and your own prompts aren’t included.
4. Use an export extension (one click)
An extension can read the conversation already on your screen and turn it into a clean file. Our Chat Export exports the full ChatGPT chat to Markdown for free, with YAML frontmatter (title, URL, date, tags) so it drops straight into Obsidian or any notes app; code blocks keep their language, tables stay tables and math stays LaTeX. Pro (9 € one-time) adds a print-quality PDF, a self-contained HTML file, picking specific messages and batch-exporting all open chat tabs. It runs entirely in your browser.
Whatever extension you use, check its permissions and privacy policy: an exporter sees your whole conversation, so prefer one that works locally and doesn’t upload chats to a server.
Which format should you pick?
- Markdown: for notes (Obsidian, Notion, Logseq), Git repos and re-using code. Smallest and most future-proof.
- PDF: for sharing with people, printing, attaching to tickets or reports.
- HTML: a single file that looks like the chat and opens in any browser, offline.
FAQ
Can I export a shared ChatGPT link?
Share links show a read-only copy; you can print it, or open it while logged in and use an extension.
Does exporting include images?
The official export includes uploaded files in the ZIP; Markdown exports usually link or omit images.
