How to export a Claude conversation (Markdown, PDF, HTML)
Claude makes it easy to copy a single answer but not to save a whole conversation as a file. Here is every option.
1. Official export of all data
In claude.ai open Settings → Privacy → Export data. You get an emailed download link with a ZIP of JSON files containing all conversations. Complete, but JSON is not something you can read or share comfortably.
2. Copy each message
The copy button under each reply gives you Markdown. Good for one answer, slow for a long session, and artifacts must be copied separately.
3. Print to PDF
Ctrl/Cmd + P → Save as PDF. The live page isn’t designed for printing, so code blocks overflow and layout breaks in long chats.
4. One-click export with an extension
Chat Export Pro (9 € one-time, no subscription) exports Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini conversations to Markdown with YAML frontmatter, to a clean print-layout PDF, or to a single self-contained HTML file. You can pick specific messages or export all open chat tabs at once. Code, tables and LaTeX are preserved, and everything happens in your browser with no server involved. (The free tier covers ChatGPT → Markdown.)
There are other Claude exporters too, some open source and some with daily PDF limits. Compare formats, limits and, above all, whether they process chats locally.
Tips
- Export long research sessions into Markdown and keep them in Obsidian or a Git repo for search.
- Use PDF for sharing with people who don’t use Claude.
- Re-use an exported Markdown file as context in a fresh Claude chat or Project.
