Claude usage limits explained: 5-hour sessions, weekly limits and how to track them
“You’ve reached your usage limit” tends to appear at the worst moment. Claude’s limits are not a simple message count, which is why they feel unpredictable. Here is how they work as of late 2026, what uses them up fastest, and how to keep an eye on them. Anthropic adjusts the details from time to time, so treat the numbers in your own account as the source of truth.
Two layers: the session and the week
- The 5-hour session. Your usage is counted in a rolling window that starts with your first message and resets about five hours later. Use it up and you wait for the reset, even if you have barely used Claude the rest of the week.
- Weekly limits. On top of that, paid plans have weekly caps, sometimes with a separate cap for the most capable models. These reset on a fixed weekly schedule shown in your settings.
Free accounts have much lower limits and fewer details on screen.
Why it’s not “X messages”
Usage depends on how much work each message is, not how many you send. Claude re-reads the conversation on every turn, so a message late in a long chat costs much more than the same message in a new chat. What weighs most:
- Long conversations: the whole history is processed again each turn.
- Attachments: big PDFs, codebases and images add a lot of context.
- Bigger models and extended thinking use more than lighter models.
- Tools: web search, research and agentic coding (Claude Code shares the same limits on subscription plans) can burn through a session quickly.
Anthropic has also said that limits can drain faster during peak weekday hours. If your work is flexible, heavy tasks at quieter times stretch further.
How to see your usage
On claude.ai, open Settings → Usage. It shows your current session and weekly usage as percentages with reset times. The catch is that it’s a page you have to remember to open. Claude also warns you shortly before you hit a limit.
If you want it always visible, our Claude Usage Tracker extension puts the session percentage on a toolbar badge (green, amber, red), shows weekly bars and counts down to each reset. Free covers that; Pro (2.99 €/month or 15 € lifetime) adds history charts, a forecast of when you’ll hit the limit at your current pace, and desktop alerts. It reads the same numbers claude.ai shows you, talks only to claude.ai, and never reads your conversations. It is not affiliated with Anthropic.
How to make your limits last longer
- Start new chats often. Ask for a short handover summary and continue in a fresh chat. This is the single biggest saving.
- Use Projects for reference material instead of pasting the same documents into each conversation.
- Pick the model for the task. Use the lighter model for quick edits and save the largest one for hard problems.
- Batch questions. One message with three questions costs less than three round-trips that each re-read the history.
- Trim attachments. Upload the relevant pages or files, not the whole folder.
- Reuse good prompts. Precise prompts get the right answer in fewer turns. A prompt library helps.
FAQ
Do Claude Code and claude.ai share limits?
On Pro and Max subscriptions, yes. Heavy coding sessions count against the same session and weekly limits.
Can I buy more?
Depending on your plan you can upgrade (e.g. to Max), or enable paid extra usage where offered. Check the Usage page for the options on your account.
Does a slow claude.ai page mean I’m near my limit?
No. Typing lag in a long chat is a browser rendering issue. See Claude chat slow or freezing?
