How to move a ChatGPT conversation to Claude (or Gemini) without losing context
Switching assistants, or just wanting a second opinion, raises the same question: how do I take this conversation with me? None of the apps can import another app’s chat directly, but you can get very close.
What Claude’s memory import does (and doesn’t)
Claude has a built-in memory import (Settings → Memory → Start import, per Anthropic’s help article). You paste what your previous assistant knows about you, and Claude stores it as memory. That covers your preferences and context, not your conversations. To continue a specific thread, use one of the methods below.
Method 1: Handover summary (fast, free)
In ChatGPT, ask: “Write a handover for another assistant: goal, decisions made, current code/drafts in full, open questions, and constraints.” Paste that into a new Claude or Gemini chat. This is the best method when the chat is long, because a summary uses far less of the new model’s context and, on Claude, less of your usage limits.
Method 2: Export the chat to Markdown and attach it
When the details matter (code, exact wording, tables), export the full conversation as a Markdown file and attach it to the new chat. Our Chat Export extension does this in one click for ChatGPT, for free. Code blocks keep their language and tables stay intact, so Claude or Gemini can read them properly. (Exporting Claude or Gemini chats, and PDF/HTML, is Pro.) Everything happens in your browser.
Method 3: Put it in a Claude Project
If you’ll keep working on the topic, upload the exported Markdown file to a Claude Project as knowledge. Every chat in that project can refer to it, and you don’t have to paste it again each time.
Method 4: Your whole history
ChatGPT’s Settings → Data controls → Export data emails you a ZIP of all your chats (chat.html + conversations.json). It’s too big to paste anywhere, so pick out the conversations you need.
Going the other way (Claude → ChatGPT)
The same methods work in reverse: ask Claude for a handover, or export the Claude chat to Markdown and attach it in ChatGPT.
FAQ
Will the new assistant “remember” everything?
It only knows what you give it. A summary plus the key files is usually better than dumping a huge transcript, which can push important details out of focus.
