Why ChatGPT gets slow in long chats (and how to tell which kind of slow you have)

“ChatGPT is slow” can mean three very different things, and the fix depends on which one you have. This article explains what happens under the hood and gives a quick way to diagnose it. If you just want the list of fixes, see 6 fixes for ChatGPT lag.

The three kinds of slow

  1. The page is slow: typing lags, scrolling stutters, the fan spins, Chrome says “Page unresponsive”. This is your browser.
  2. The answer is slow: it takes a long time before the reply starts, or it streams slowly even in a fresh chat. This is OpenAI’s servers or your network.
  3. The answers get worse: ChatGPT forgets things you said early on or contradicts itself. This is the context window, not speed at all.

Why the page gets slow: rendering cost grows with every message

The ChatGPT web app keeps the entire conversation in the page. Each message is not just text: there is formatted Markdown, syntax-highlighted code, tables, math, buttons and menus. A few hundred turns can add up to tens of thousands of page elements.

Two moments are particularly expensive:

Memory adds to it: a tab that has been open for days with a long chat can use a lot of RAM, and on machines without much memory the system starts swapping.

Diagnose in 2 minutes

  1. Open a new chat in another tab and type there. Smooth? Then the old chat’s size is the problem (kind 1).
  2. Open Chrome’s Task Manager (Shift+Esc on Windows/Linux, or ⋮ → More tools → Task manager). A ChatGPT tab using well over 1 GB of memory, or high CPU while idle, confirms rendering load.
  3. Try Incognito with extensions off. If it’s suddenly fast, an extension (grammar checker, translator) is scanning the huge page.
  4. If even a new chat is slow to respond, check status.openai.com and your connection (kind 2).

Fixes for each cause

Does this happen in Claude and Gemini too?

Yes. All three web apps keep long conversations in the page, so the same rendering cost applies. On Claude, long chats also use up your usage limits faster, because the whole history is processed every turn.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT Plus make long chats faster?

A paid plan affects server-side speed and limits, not how your browser renders a huge page.

Will clearing cache help?

Rarely. Reloading the tab frees memory; clearing the cache mostly just logs you out.
